Air Pollution Increases Risk of 4 Different Cancers
Long-term exposure to air pollutants known as fine particulate air pollutants (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) could increase the risk of non-lung cancer, according to recent research. A link was specifically uncovered between these air pollutants and colorectal, prostate, breast, and endometrial cancers.
“Our findings uncover the biological plausibility of air pollution as a crucial risk factor in the development of specific cancers, bringing us one step closer to understanding the impact of air pollution on human health,” said Yaguang Wei, a research fellow.
The study involved data spanning from 2000-2016 that was collected from national Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 or older. While previous research has connected air pollution to an increased risk of lung cancer, these new findings suggest that the risk goes well beyond the lungs.
Nitrogen dioxide largely comes from the burning of fossil fuels (including emissions from vehicles, equipment, and power plants), while fine particulate air pollutants can be emitted from any type of fire/burning, construction, and agricultural activities. Outdoor exposure is difficult to avoid, but a quality air purifier can cut down on indoor pollutants.
Vitamin B6 Supplements Could Help Reduce Anxiety, Depression
High-dose vitamin B6 tablets may be able to help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, a new study has found. Overall, participants reported feeling less anxious and depressed after taking the supplement daily for just one month.
“Vitamin B6 helps the body produce a specific chemical messenger that inhibits impulses in the brain,” said Dr David Field, lead study author. “...our study links this calming effect with reduced anxiety among the participants.”
The study involved over 300 young adults who were assigned to take a B6 supplement, a B12 supplement, or a placebo for a month. Both B12 and the placebo had no noticeable effect, but the B6 groups had increased levels of GABA, a neurotransmitter that helps calm the brain and nervous system.
Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, is found in foods like tuna, salmon, poultry, chickpeas, and some fruits and vegetables. However, the researchers did point out that the supplement used in the study contained much higher amounts of B6 than you can get from your diet.

The Real Reason You Lose Muscle Mass as You Age
The average person has lost about 30% of their muscle mass by the time they hit age 60— but have you ever wondered why this happens?
As you might imagine, it has a lot to do with protein, which is a critical macronutrient for muscle health. However, muscle mass loss is NOT simply due to a lack of protein in the diet but rather to the fact that your body uses it less efficiently. You can find out exactly why this happens and how to start making protein work for (rather than against) your body in The Real Reason You're Losing Muscle Mass as You Age, and How to Stop It and Even Reverse It. This free information is written by the highly respected formulator, Dr. Frank Shallenberger, who is board certified by the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. You’ll discover the 3 specific reasons people lose so much lean body mass as they age as well as how Dr. Shallenberger recommends
solving this problem and easily boosting both muscle and bone mass.

The 7 Worst and 14 Best Foods for Inflammation
Many things can fuel chronic inflammation— a big contributor to age-related diseases— but diet is often the #1 culprit. Foods like refined carbs, processed meats, baked goods, and sweetened beverages are some of the “worst offenders” and, unfortunately, are prevalent in the standard western diet. On the flip side, beans, avocados, citrus, leafy greens, and nuts are all inflammation-fighters. Berries also make the list as do apples, coffee, and tea. (More)
Consuming Added Sugars May Increase Your Risk of Kidney Stones
Kidney stones affect somewhere between 7-15% of people in North America and can lead to unpleasant symptoms like nausea, pain, vomiting, chills, and bloody urine. There are many risk factors for kidney stones, including having diabetes or being dehydrated, but a new study has shown for the first time that eating lots of added sugars can also increase your risk of kidney stones. Added sugars are most commonly found in processed foods like sodas, candy, cookies, ice cream, and fruit drinks. (More)
Peppermint Oil Aromatherapy Could Improve Pain
Both aromatherapy and peppermint oil, specifically, have shown potential for easing certain types of pain. Where peppermint is concerned, this effect is often attributed to a compound known as menthol, which has a cooling effect when applied topically. Now, some new research has found that peppermint oil could also relieve pain when used in aromatherapy after heart surgery— meaning it may not even have to come in contact with the skin to work. Plus, it improved sleep quality, too. (More)
Aerobic Exercise + Strength Training May Be Best Combo for Longevity
Regular exercise is key to a healthy lifestyle, but which type should you focus on to live long and well? As it turns out, a combination of different types of exercise may be better for longevity than any one on its own. This was highlighted in a recent large study that pinpointed a combination of moderate and vigorous aerobic activity AND strength training as the best way to reduce mortality risk (particularly cancer-related mortality risk) via exercise. Surprising Sources of Formaldehyde in Your Home
Formaldehyde is a strong-smelling chemical that is officially declared as being "carcinogenic to humans" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). In spite of this, it’s still commonly used in a number of products that you could be exposed to every day. Some of the more surprising sources include certain cosmetics and personal care products, keratin hair treatments, and pressed-wood products used to make everything from sub-flooring to cabinets. Capillaries are the tiniest blood vessels in your vascular system— measuring only about 8-10 micrometers in diameter. Nevertheless, they play the important role of connecting arteries to veins, although red blood cells have to pass through them in “single file.”
